Deadline for registrations with SGS-DTC: 22nd February 2013
Deadline for applications: 8th March 2013
Eligibility: UK and EU nationals

An open competition for studentships will be available to individuals wishing to undertake a PhD within the Information Science Pathway in academic year 2013-14. These studentships are offered as part of the Scottish Graduate School of Social Sciences Doctoral Training Centre (SGS-DTC).

The Information Science Pathway is a collaborative activity involving the following institutes:
  • Edinburgh Napier University, Institute for Informatics and Digital Innovation
  • Robert Gordon University, Department of Information Management
  • University of Glasgow, Humanities Advanced Technology and Information Institute
  • University of Strathclyde, Department of Computer and Information Sciences
Interested applicants should first contact the Pathway representative at the institution where they believe their research interests are best represented by staff research activity to discuss their research proposal and potential supervisors. For information on information science research activities at specific institutions applicants are advised to visit the following web pages or contact the Pathway representative indicated below:

Edinburgh Napier University   Prof Hazel Hall   h.hall@napier.ac.uk
University of Glasgow   Dr Ian Anderson   I.Anderson@hatii.arts.gla.ac.uk
Robert Gordon University   Prof Peter Reid   p.reid@rgu.ac.uk
University of Strathclyde   Prof Forbes Gibb   forbes.gibb@strath.ac.uk

As applications need to be supported by a Pathway representative, you are advised to make contact with your chosen institution as soon as possible, and well in advance of the registration date. This should be no later than the 8th February 2013.

Once you have obtained the support of the Pathway representative you should register with the SGS-DTC by 22nd February 2013 at this web page. They will then check your eligibility for an ESRC studentship.

Once your eligibility has been confirmed you should then submit the relevant supporting documents and complete the application form at this web site. The key documents are:
  • A Curriculum Vitae
  • A research proposal using the template downloadable from the SGS-STC website
  • Degree transcripts
  • A statement of support from your potential supervisor
The final deadline for applications is the 8th of March 2013.

Full details of how to apply are contained in the Guidelines for Students, and general information on studentships can be found on the ESRC web site.

The nomination of applicants to the Open Competition will be determined by the Governance Committee established for the Pathway.
